Land Acknowledgement

We recognize that The Berkeley School sits on the territory of Huichin, the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo-speaking Lisjan Ohlone people, the successors of the historic and sovereign Verona Band of Alameda County.

We are currently in the process of reassessing our practices around our land acknowledgement. You can read our full statement here.

READ-A-THON WEEK AT TBS
8th Graders Create Middle School Library

TBS 8th graders took matters into their own hands when they saw an opportunity one Thursday afternoon: newly freed-up space with lots of potential, an interest in expanding the library, and encouragement from their teachers.

Stay tuned for more about this civic engagement project led by 8th grade Humanities teacher, Jennifer Lettieri, in next week's bulletin. In the meantime, scroll through to see what the bobcats have been up to on both campuses during what has been a very busy and exciting Read-a-thon week - celebrating our love of books in all possible ways.
More about what the 8th graders have been up to in next week's bulletin!
Read Alouds and Author Visits
We were extremely fortunate to welcome visiting authors to engage students in read alouds and hands-on activities on both campuses.  At ECC, we were fortunate to kick-start read-a-thon week with a special visit from local children’s book author, Serena Gingold Allen. After a read aloud of her books Moonlight Prance and Sunrise Dance, the students had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in a lively discussion about their favorite animals.
At UAC, we had a number of great authors, from near and far, engaging with the students through read alouds, drawing demonstrations, as well as book signings! Our sincere thanks to our visiting authors Danielle Anderson-Craig, Mike White, Dashka Slater, and Serena Gingold Allen, who made another visit with our kindergarten and 1st grade classes, for taking the time to visit our campus.
Visiting author Danielle Anderson-Craig meets with Sweet Briar Creek via Zoom.
Visiting author Mike White signs books for Laurel Creek and Blackberry Creek students.
Visiting author Serena Gingold-Allen visits with the Sweet Briar Creek students.
Visiting author Dashka Slater presents to 5th and 6th grade classes in the outdoor classroom.
6th and 7th graders took a break from their busy school day to read to our younger students downstairs.

Cerrito Creek Library Visit

We have been growing out book collections through library visits and our annual book swap. On Tuesday afternoon, Cerrito Creek (5th) went on a walking field trip down University Avenue to the West Branch of Berkeley Public Library. They checked out books to support their research project on inventors as well as a large collection of graphic novels! Some students even applied for their own library card for the first time.

The Art of Bookmaking- from TK to 5th Grade

Mariposa (TK) friends created booklets with photographs of local wildflowers that they have been studying, as a lovely guide to bring on hikes and nature walks!

Meanwhile, Strawberry Creek (4th) and Cerrito Creek (5th) students got to try out two very clever methods of bookmaking as well as the Japanese stab binding method with a tutorial from fellow 4th grader, Lilit!
Transformation Tuesday

At UAC, students and staff had a lot of fun dressing up as their favorite book characters. We were starstruck seeing such a wide spectrum of fictional characters gracing our campus!
