February Highlights

  • Congratulations to Ania Alaniz Barba, Senior at TLC Chula Vista, for being admitted to San Diego State University! If you are a TLC senior, you can keep us updated about your celebrations and plans by e-mailing TLCstudentnews@learningchoice.org.
  • We celebrated National School Counseling Week this month, from Feb 7 - Feb 11. This week focuses attention on the unique contribution that school counselors make to our school systems. TLC is so grateful for our School Counselors -- Samantha Peterson, and Diane Barrett for all they do for our students and school!
  • TLC La Mesa celebrated a month of kindness with decorations across campus, including some friendly competitions on whose door/window had the best kindness-themed decor. Read more about TLC's month long commitment to kindness below.

Spreading Kindness

Last month, TLC schools participated in the Great Kindness Challenge, which is focused on creating a culture of kindness. TLC La Mesa decided to extend the theme throughout February. During this month, teachers handed out tickets to students they saw performing acts of kindness and students were able to turn in their tickets for prizes. Students and staff also decorated windows across campus to celebrate and promote the theme. Together, these pieces were aimed at helping students and staff pay attention to kindness -- including moments in which we can be kind, when others are kind to us, and how acts of kindness create a ripple effect that extends out to create a kind school culture.

TLC La Mesa spread kindness this February

The below video is a great example of how an act of kindness can spread to create a culture of kindness that benefits all. What is one idea you have to spread kindness to others?

Your 5-day Weather Forecast

Third grade students in Mrs. Garcia's classroom at TLC Chula Vista are currently learning about weather and climate in their science unit. As part of this unit of study, students have researched a variety of jobs in the field of weather. They also learned about the tools that meteorologists use to study and predict weather and climate patterns – both long and short term.

Students also dived into the world of extreme weather. They researched different types of extreme weather events and how scientists are taking steps to better predict these weather extremes in order to prevent significant loss, harm, or damage to people and the environment.

Students engaged in what they were learning, and had fun making meaning of the information, through creating their own 5-day weather forecasts. They used multiple media sources to deliver the information to their classroom and present it in a realistic and exciting way!

You can see two of these creative student projects by Grace Regala and Lucas Sanchez in the video below.

Student Work Spotlight

This month’s student work spotlight comes from 10th grade students at TLC La Mesa, who created an art board based on Fahrenheit 451. As part of a larger discussion on censorship and knowledge students were asked, "What book do you love the most or that changed your life, and what would it be like if you had never been able to read it?" The art board displays some of their thoughts and responses to this question.

Another student art feature comes from Zoey Flores, 11th grade student from TLC San Diego, who sketched Camilo Madrigal as Dolores from Encanto.

If you are a student and you would like to submit work to be featured, email tlcstudentnews@learningchoice.org. Submissions can be videos, written pieces, art work, or anything that highlights what you have learned at TLC.

Food for Thought

This month we are talking about added sugar. What is “added” sugar exactly? As the Center for Science in the Public Interest describes, “Added sugars include sugars that are added to foods and beverages when they are processed.” The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 24g of added sugars a day, based on a 2,000 calorie diet. Unfortunately many of us consume far more than this from sugary drinks like soda, flavored milk, and juice drinks, as well as from desserts and sweet snacks. For instance, a standard 20oz. Coca-Cola has 65g of sugar!

So how do we keep an eye out for added sugars and work to replace them with natural sugars? The first step is to notice when they appear in your foods. Some common names for added sugars on labels include: Brown sugar, Corn sweetener, Corn syrup, Fruit juice concentrates, High-fructose corn syrup, Honey, Invert sugar, Malt sugar, Molasses, Raw sugar, Sugar, or Sugar molecules ending in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose).

The below chart helps to differentiate natural vs added sugars to start making healthy choices. You can find more information to help inform your food choices from the American Heart Association here.

Happy 100th day of School!

TLC San Diego celebrated the 100th day of school with some well-themed festivities. They set up a "Museum of 100" and students created exhibits that featured 100 items of their choosing. Whether it was creating art work with 100 Swedish fish or baseball cards, or bringing in a bag of 100 beads, students celebrated this milestone in their own ways. Congrats to all for making it this far!

Meet Clyde

This month's pet comes from Rebeca Medina, Instructional Assistant at TLC Chula Vista. Rebecca's mischievous dog, Clyde, is always by her side, but also likes to keep her on her toes...

Animal: Dog

Breed: Shepsky (half German Shepard, half Husky)

Nickname: Prince of Darkness

Hobbies: Stealing. Yes, Clyde is a habitual thief. (Don't be like Clyde)!
