Central Coast schools closures continue due to weather and flooding alerts

CENTRAL COAST, Calif. (KION-TV)- Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties' local school districts have closed their schools for a fourth straight day.

Here is a complete list of school districts that announced they would be closing their campuses. This article will continue to be updated as we get new information.

Monterey County

Salinas Union School District and Santa Rita Union School District both closed classes on Thursday due to flooding and evacuation threats around the Salinas River.

Dr. Summer Prather-Smith, Director of Parent and Family Engagement of Santa Rita Union School District, said all schools would remain closed on Friday.

The Salinas Union High School District also announced they will stop classes until at least Tuesday due to the Holiday weekend.

Salinas City Elementary School District also announced the closure of classes for Friday.

Prather-Smith said they plan to open schools on Tuesday since Monday, Jan. 16, will be Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Washington Union School District announced that all schools would be closed on Thursday. District officials said they would update students if the school happens on Friday.

Soledad Unified School District canceled classes on Thursday.

Spreckels Union School District canceled classes on Thursday. District Superintendent Eric Tarallo said in a statement that they expect to provide another update Thursday afternoon.

Santa Cruz County

Most Pajaro Valley Unified School District schools will still be closed on Thursday. Those schools include

  • Ann Soldo Elementary School
  • Calabasas Elementary School
  • Hall District Elementary School
  • Ohlone Elementary School
  • Radcliff Elementary School
  • Lakeview Middle School
  • Pajaro Middle School
  • Watsonville High School
  • Renaissance High School
  • Infant Development Center at Watsonville High School
  • Post Secondary at Watsonville Youth Center

All other schools in Pajaro Valley Unified School District unaffected by evacuation orders are open.
