Dear Oakland Unified Community:
I am very pleased to be at this long awaited moment to share an update on the Strategic Plan process with the Board of Education and our community.
This plan started with my team spending time in nearly 20 living rooms across the city, listening to everyday parents and families – from deep east to west, hills to the flats – listening to the concerns, aspirations, hopes and challenges of our families and students. The plan also started with critical time spent with our students and educators in nearly all of our school sites.
The most recent phase of the work on the Strategic Plan involved gathering almost 80 staff and community members to work on developing the vision, key actions and deliverables for four initiatives that make up the draft Strategic Plan:
1) Ensuring Strong Readers by 3rd Grade;
2) Supporting Powerful Graduates;
3) Creating Joyful Schools; and,
4) Growing Diverse and Stable Staff
I invite you to learn more about the 2021-24 Strategic Plan process; read on for an overview of this work, recent highlights, next steps, and how you can get involved.Overview of the Strategic Plan:Recent Highlights (Phase 2):
- Nearly 80 community partners, parents, students, educators, school leaders, and district administrators have been participating in our four working groups, each group focused on one of the four Strategic Plan initiatives.
- Summaries of each of the working group meeting sessions are posted on the strategic plan website.
- The working groups created a draft report which was shared with the community during engagements on June 3 and June 7. We are so grateful to all who attended and provided thoughtful feedback.
Next Steps/Get Involved:Share your ideas and feedback using our online form at any time throughout this process!
- Tonight, June 16, the draft report will be presented to the Board of Education for a first read.
- On June 30, the Board of Education will hold a vote on the Strategic Plan.
- Join the online Board meetings at www.ousd.org/boewatch to listen/watch or to make a public comment.
-
Phase 3, (July 2021 - June 2022): Implementation of year one actions and planning for years two and three. There will be several community engagement opportunities over the next year to share our progress, outline the key actions, and to plan for the following two years. Community collaboration during this phase is vital.
-
Phase 4, (July 2022 - June 2024): Ongoing refinement and execution of the key actions and deliverables. As we draw to the close of this plan, we will refine our strategies and monitor our successes for future planning.
As always, please visit
