After School Special -- September 9, 2023
Upcoming Events in September
iReady Assessment in Math and English Language Arts
PARENTS: Please make sure your child brings their chromebook charged and ready to use every day this week! We will provide all students with a personal set of headphones for use on the assessment, but they are welcome to use their own during the test if they bring a pair from home. Headphones must have a jack that plugs into a chromebook (not wireless).
- 9/11-9/13: All students take the math iReady test
- 9/13-9/15: All students take the ELA iReady test

Tiger Parents (for parents and guardians)
Tiger Parents will have their first meeting of the school year on Monday, September 11 @ 7:00 PM in the NAMS library. Tiger Parents is the parent group at NAMS and helps organize volunteer and fundraising opportunities at the school. We seek to be a group that supports the goals of the school and we strive to be a positive connection point for the families of NAMS.
Please join us on Monday to learn more about upcoming events and volunteer opportunities!

After School Activities
Note: If your child typically rides the bus, please note that parents will need to arrange transportation following an after-school activity, as busses will not return to pick up students. Please send your child with a note to let us know that you give them permission to stay for the activity and to miss their bus.
Homework Club
When: Wednesdays, 1:45pm-3pm, beginning September 20th
Where: NAMS Library
What: All students are welcome to participate in Homework Club. Students may work independently in this quiet space or ask for support from one of our SEAs (Education Assistants).

Cross Country
What: All students are encouraged to participate in our cross-country team this fall. This is an after-school sport that includes long-distance running.
Staff: Mrs. Spires and Mr. Asay
Note: Applications are available with coaches Lisa Spires, Nick Asay, and in the NAMS office. 7th and 8th graders must get a physical from a doctor, so the sooner you start this process, the better!
Practices:
- When: 2:50-3:45 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with possible noted exceptions
- Dates: September 11 - October 14
- Where: NAMS track

- Saturday, 9/23: Northwest Classic 2023 - Lane Community College, Eugene
- Saturday, 9/30: Sweet Home Chapel Race - Sweet Home
- Saturday, October 7: The Harrier Classic - Bryant Park, Albany
- Saturday, October 14: Lewis & Clark XC Invitational - Milo McIver State Park, Estacada
Note: Track and Field will begin meeting in the spring.
Acceptance Initiative
What: This is a club offered at NAMS that supports the LGBTQ+ community. If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ or an ally, you are welcome to join.
When: The first (brief) meeting is on Friday, 9/15, from 2:45-3pm. Members will vote on which days they'd like to hold the club moving forward.

Band Practice
What: Students in Mr. Nelson's band classes are invited to stay after school for this optional band practice.
When: 2:45-3:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays

A note from Mr. Nelson: This is practice time...not hang out time. Students must be responsible and self-motivated.
Yearbook (after winter break)
What: Students in yearbook will help create/design the yearbook for NAMS for this school year.
When: After school one day a week meeting from 2:45-3:30PM. We will continue to meet once a week until the yearbook is completed which normally is April. See Mrs. Bottaro for more information.

Musical (after winter break)
NOTE: The NAMS musical theater production of Seussical Jr. will be moved to the Spring. It will NOT BE IN THE FALL.
Staff: Jason Caffarella
Performance dates will be April 18, 19, and 20, at 7pm, in the Albany Performing Arts Center. There will also be performances for the schools during the day on Wednesday, April 17. Auditions for the musical will be held sometime after winter break, TBA.
