August 11, 1944 - January 26, 2023
It is with profound sadness to announce that on Thursday, January 26, Avi Poster left this world. But he left it in a better place.
Avi Poster experienced an incredible career as a highly decorated, award winning educator and school principal in Chicago. During that time he was honored in Washington D.C. by Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama for Excellence in Education. Avi moved to Nashville in 2001, devoting his time and his heart to the non-profit world. He was a fervent activist for social justice, serving the underprivileged and a Jewish community leader. He served on over 50 non-profit boards where he fiercely fought for the underdog, and was passionate about education, immigration rights, poverty reduction and preserving the dignity of all human beings. Although Avi was never Mayor, some referred to him as the “Mayor Of Nashville” and he served as a Metro Council Member.
Avi is survived by wife, Joie Scott-Poster, who loved him more than words could express and was honored to spend 36 beautiful years with him, his sister, Sarah Levin and sister-in-law, Susan Handelman. He was deeply loved and adored by his nieces and nephews, Yael Levin, Naavah Levin, Itamar Levin, Matthew Libman, Samantha Rubin and Daniel Libman.
Avi has been a positive influence to the hearts and life’s of literally thousands of people. He never judged … he only loved. He is irreplaceable and will be missed in ways beyond words.
