After school opportunities and programs for Elementary (JK-5) and Middle Schoolers (6-8) happen all over the city – on School campuses, at City Youth Centers, community centers, local non-profits, businesses and more. This guide brings all of these opportunities together in one place. The After School Quick Guide on the next few pages provides an overview of the programs that will meet your young person’s specific needs. |
What is the MSN and ESON? |
The Elementary School Out-of-School Time Network (ESON) and Middle School Network (MSN) is coordinated by the Cambridge Agenda for Children Out-of-School Time (OST), a citywide intermediary working with Cambridge Public Schools as well as many other city-run and community-based programs serving young people beyond the school day and year. The Agenda for Children OST’s mission is to increase equity, access and innovation and sustain the highest quality OST opportunities and experiences for all children, youth and families. The Banneker Extended Enrichment Program (BEE) is an academic reinforcement program, with an emphasis on learning through extra curricular enrichment. They encourage children to have creative play and activities to learn about themselves and the world around them. Students are to complete homework, build good study habits, and explore activities such as arts and crafts, languages, and subjects that may lead to lifelong interests and widen their world of possibilities. Students also learn basic conflict resolution and leadership skills. All students are encouraged to feel safe to be themselves as they learn to work within the community while in the program. Primary Program Activities: | gbSTEM offers four different tracks: computer science, mathematics, engineering, and science. All will be conducted either remotely via Zoom or in-person in groups of about 5-10 students. Each class will meet for two 45-60 minute sessions every week. They emphasize creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration in order to foster a welcoming environment where students can form lasting friendships. | |

Local theater company puts on a big musical every spring starring middle schoolers and including 3-5th graders as ensemble members. Low-pressure auditions happen at Upper Schools in Dec/Jan, rehearsals are 1-2 days a week afterschool through the spring. More info: beyondthe4thwall.com

This MIT Educational Studies program happens over five weekends in Feb 2024-April 2024, on Sat and Sun for a few hours each day. Classes are for 7-12th graders, either on MIT campus or online, and are taught by MIT students. Deadline is usually in Mid-February; costs $40 with financial aid available. Young people work in groups on neighborhood and community issues that they care about in this youth employment program. Program is through the Office of Workforce Development at City of Cambridge Dept of Human Services and happens at Cambridge Youth Centers (Frisoli, Moore, Russell, Gately, Moses). Applications are usually available in mid-February for young people aged 14 & 15. Must be a Cambridge resident and eligible to work in the U.S. Young people are paid minimum wage for their hours in the program. Transportation to After School for Cambridge Public Schools Students |
| All JK-5th grade students are eligible to ride the bus to an after school program (e.g. youth center, community program, etc.) if it is located one mile or more from their school. This is arranged through the school clerk and a Transportation Change Form (available on CPS website). | |||
| All 6th-8th grade students are eligible to ride the bus to an after school program (e.g. youth center, community program, etc.) if it is located 1.5 or more miles from their school. This is arranged through the school clerk and a Transportation Change Form (available on CPS website). | |||
| Late Bus: from October - May (while Upper Schools are running their own after school clubs and intramurals) students who are eligible to ride the bus home can take the “late bus” home at 4:30pm (or to an after school program, like a youth center). This bus only operates on the days clubs/intramurals are being offered: only on Tuesdays, Wed and Thursdays. All Upper Schools offer a late bus, and many elementary schools offer the service, as well. Please check in with your school clerk to find out more. The Late Bus follows a standard route that loops around the city. See CPS website (go to Departments and choose Transportation) for a list of Late Bus stops. | |||
